Brief Description: The 17th slide in series showing the first lock on the Thames, St Johns and Lockhouse. -
Subject Date: 1911
Creator: Parker, W
Owner: Oxfordshire CC
Contributor: Centre for Oxfordshire Studies

Full Description: After Lechlade is St Johns Lock, which is really the first lock on the Thames, the one at Inglesham being at the end of the canal. Here there is a lock house. - - This point is about 143 1/2 miles from London Bridge. And 120 from Teddington Weir. A few yards on beyond the bridge the River Lech creeps into the Thames. The regulation towpath exists from Inglesham Round House downwards, but here it is rarely trampled by horses, as barge traffic is not known. For boats it is occasionally used. You can see one in the picture though these upper regions are rarely penetrated by the tourist.
