Full Description: Little of the ancient Abbey is to be found amongst the present ruins. As the time of the dissolution of the monasteries the report of the Commissioners shows it had at that time only two monks, servants none, wood none - debts none, bells worth £2.1.8, the house wholly in ruins and the value of the movable goods £11.3.8. Henry VIII certainly did not get much out of that lot. (It is the same with the Thames as with other rivers, the monks always chose the most lovely spot for the erection of their monastic buildings. |
