Full Description: Magna Carta Island, whereon was signed that solemn declaration: - "That no Freeman shall be siezed or imprisoned or dispossessed or outlawed or condemned and committed to prison except by the legal judgement of his peers or by the laws of the land" - Such doubtless you will recollect runs the wording of Magna Carta, which one was compelled to learn by heart at School. Like many other famous places, there is a dispute whether the document was actually signed on Magna Carta Island by King John, or on the meadow opposite called Runnymede. At Magna Carta Island is a Gothic Cottage built by one of the Harcourts, Lords of the Manor, as an alter-house for a large rough stone, which bears the inscription setting forth that King John signed Magna Carta on that island, and tradition says that the stone itself was the royal writing desk.
