Brief Description: 151st slide in series showing View from Battersea Bridge and passenger steam ships.
Subject Date: 1911
Creator: Parker, W
Owner: Oxfordshire CC
Contributor: Centre for Oxfordshire Studies

Full Description: This view is taken from Battersea Bridge which joins Battersea and Chelsea. Battersea was once a quaint village, three miles out of London: a description which hardly applies to it now. Chelsea Church is seen in front of the picture. Now days Chelsea is becoming fashionable along the river front, but the chief interest lies in one or two other places. Two of the most interesting houses in Cheyne Walk, are those occupied formerly by the late Dante Gabriel Rosetti, and that where George Elliot died: but the greatest feature in Modern Chelsea is the house of Thomas Carlyle who lived for many years in Gt Cheyne Row, and died there in 1881
