Brief Description: 105th slide in series showing two bridges at Maidenhead with two ladies in a skiff.
Subject Date: 1911
Creator: Parker, W
Owner: Oxfordshire CC
Contributor: Centre for Oxfordshire Studies

Full Description: Maidenhead and a view of the Two Bridges over the Thames. Maidenhead was anciently know as South Ealington, and its present name is derived from Maiden Hithe ie new wharf, for a large wharf or hithe formerly stood near the bridge. It was at the Greyhound Inn (not now existing) that Charles I took at last farewell of his children. Most of the history of the town centres about the bridge. The old bridge was of wood, and one tree a year was granted from Windsor Forest for its repair. The first bridge in the picture is the Railway Bridge and beneath it, there is a very curious vibrating echo, hence the local appellation "Sounding Arch"
