Full Description: Woolwich is the Arsenal, and the Arsenal is Woolwich, and a few years ago one regrets to say it was very much in evidence, but fortunately we have again the "Piping Times of Peace". - - It was close to Woolwich where the pleasure steamer the "Princess Alice" sank in 1878 with upwards of 600 persons. - - On the other side of the river not far from Woolwich is Barking, where are the sewer works of the London County Council. There still remain relics of the once famous Barking Abbey, with the ancient Curfew Tower. |
