Brief Description: Eva - A Thames Steam Launch on permanent display in the Henley gallery
Subject Date: 1874
Creator: John I. Thornycroft
Owner: River and Rowing Museum
Contributor: River and Rowing Museum

Full Description: Eva was built by the company John I. Thornycroft at Chiswick in 1874. She was supplied for use by the umpire at Henyley Royal Regatta for the years 1874-76. Eva was one of the fastest steam launches of her time, with a top speed of sixteen and a half miles per hour, easily quick enough to keep up with rowing eights. Eva was purchased by the River and Rowing Museum in 1995, with grant aid from the PRISM Fund. Some parts, including the funnel and the original steam engine, were missing. Replacement parts, based on her sister ship, and the original boat builders drawings, show hoew Eva would have looked around 1890. The arrangement of Eva's propellor and rudder is unusual. When steaming at full speed she is said to be almost unsteerable and unstoppable. She was sold to H. E. Rhodes in 1876 who added the cabin and used her as a pleasure boat until she was sold to Ashton Allen in 1885. Eva was presented to Thornycrofts museum in 1947 where she languished until 1968, when Graham Lindsay strarted here restoration
