Lower Ferry Cliveden |
|
|
103rd slide in series showing Cliveden Woods with a ferryman crossing the river. - - Cliveden itself is an interesting and historical house, having been erected by George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham. It was destroyed in 1851 by one of the maid servants indulging in the practice of reading in bed by candle light. She, having fallen asleep, the candle set the hangings on fire, and nothing but a little furniture and a few pictures were saved. The house subsequently came into the hands of Frederick, Prince of Wales, father of George III (of whom it is said "He was alive and "is dead" so there is no more to be said") Rule Britannia was first performed at a Masque at Cliveden |
