It has been possible for at least 100 years to hire a range of rowing boats on the non-tidal Thames for day trips or holidays. The old established firm of Salters used to offer for hire boats which the tourist could return to any of a number of participating boat yards along the river as far downstream as Teddington; the boat yard would then return the vessel to Oxford.
