Feathers Wharf is a typical example of an industrial site where the land has been polluted and it only seems fit to be used as a local dump for household and commercial waste.

From here, the waste is transferred to lighters before travelling down the Thames to be deposited in landfill sites in Essex. Whilst the introduction of recycling and burning of waste on the site might reduce some forms of the pollution, local inhabitants still feel that more could be done.

The challenge for the 21st century is how to return the area to a pleasant mixed use of light industry and housing, whilst giving the public recreational access to the river.
