Hampton Court Palace
Hampton Court Palace is possibly the most beautiful of the royal residences in England. The old manor was developed by the Knights Hospitallers during the 13th century, but we can thank Cardinal Wolsey for an immense building program from 1514. When the cardinal failed to get the Pope's consent to the divorce of Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, he fell out of favour with the king. Henry acquired the property in 1528, and extended it into the opulent palace that we see today.
