Henley Regatta
We will not attempt to pass through Henley in the first week of July. From early morning to late evening the water churns with the exertions of crews racing from Temple Island to the finishing line at Phyllis Court.

The regatta was first held during an afternoon in 1839. The event was so popular with oarsmen, that it has taken place every year since, with the exception of two world wars. In 1829, ten years before the first official Henley regatta, Cambridge had challenged Oxford to a boat race at Henley, which became the first of the now annual events known as ‘The Boat Race’ which is held in April between Putney and Mortlake.
