Medmenham Abbey
Medmenham Abbey, founded by strict Cistercians around 1200, became renowned for a very different reason in the 19th Century. After the dissolution of the monasteries, the abbey passed into the Duffield family, who leased it to Sir Francis Dashwood, Chancellor of the Exchequer, in the 18th century.

Sir Francis and his friends formed the Hellfire Club, dressed up as the ‘Medmenham Monks’, and are rumoured to have used the abbey like a brothel, with the motto ‘"Fay ce que voudras" roughly translating to "Do as you wish"

Hurley Weir
White water canoeists flock to Hurley Weir each year for events such as the Hurley Rodeo. Weirs have existed on the Thames for hundreds of years to raise the water level, but only in the last few decades have they become centres for sport.
