Introduction
Henley Regatta, and the Annual Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge, rank as international symbols of the British having fun on the Thames.
Racing was just one element of life on the river, with camping canoes, day launches, and pleasure launches providing a more relaxed method of exploring nature.
Advertisements show that fishing was a very popular hobby in the Victorian era, and a number of swimming clubs and bathing houses existed in the years before the Second World War.
In the following pages we will explore some of these pursuits using photographs, artwork and documents made available by archives and libraries along the route of the River.
The theme is broken down into a number of sections which can be selected from the left hand panel. We will add to them as documents and images become available.
